| Abstract | This article analyzes the research on the state of the art of teacher education in Latin America in the last three decades. In the first part, it refers to the meaning of the expression state of the art and its object of study. In the second part, it establishes the origins of the research related to the state of the art of teacher education in the continent. It also analyzes the material published between 1985 and 2002 that is available in the Data Base of REDUC. Finally, the theoretical and methodological foundations that ground the research as a whole are analyzed. The state of the art studies have contributed to the creation of a theoretical and methodological data base. Through its organization, it has made it easier to determine the educational problems of scientific and social interest that should direct the new research projects, both at the regional and national level.
