| Abstract | The breeding biology and range of Northern Raven were studied in Corsica during the breeding seasons 1999 and 2000. Breeding density, phenology and success were studied in different habitats: the west coast, a pastoral zone in the lowlands, a pastoral zone in altitude and the montane habitat. During 1999 and 2000, 32 and 39 nests were monitored respectively. Nest sites were found from 20 m to 1500 m altitude in all open habitats. Density of breeding pairs was very high in grazed habitats (17-20 pairs / 100 km 2 ), and low in montane zone (4-8 pairs / 100 km 2 ) and on the coast (11-14 pairs / 100 km of coast). Therefore, inter-nest distances varied between zones and were comprised between 1.6 km in pastoral zones and 6 km on the coast. Fledging period was spread over one month with a mean date of 7 June in 1999 and 15 June in 2000. Number of fledglings varied from 1 to 5 per pair, and in average 2.4 juveniles Hedged per successful nest in 1999 against 2.2 in 2000, with a smaller success in the coastal zone. The proportion of successful pairs in grazing zone varied from 95 % (n=19) to 63 % (n=16). The high density of Ravens in Corsica is discussed in relation to local farming practices. |
