The objective of this study was to delineate the characteristics of informal caregivers working with an elderly population of dependant seniors by describing socio-economical and health aspects as well as quality of life of those two groups. It was an observational study containing descriptive and analytic aspects realized using a transversal fraction of the population from 2007 to 2008. The sample was made of 145 seniors (> 60 years old) residents in the municipality of Veranópolis randomly selected from the Secretaria Municipal de Saúde for the Programa Nacional de Imunização contra o Influenza in the years of 2006 and 2007 and their respective caregivers. In total 47 caregivers were found to be working with that sample of seniors. The results showed a considerable need for caregivers by the elderly population. Moreover, the need for a caregiver increased gradually as the age of the population increased, especially for seniors above 80-year old. The predominant characteristics of the caregiver were similar to those reported by the literature. The typical caregivers were women, daughters or spouses, married, middle aged and with children. The survey indicated that the most difficult day-to-day tasks for a caregiver were related with personal care and with supporting daily basic human needs of the seniors. The caregivers emphasized those tasks as contributing to extenuating shifts. The quality of life of the caregivers showed to be lower than the control sample, mainly observed by their health self-evaluation. A significant difference was notable in the psychological pattern of the two groups investigated, thus confirming health problems in the population of caregivers and the influence of the elderly population in the life of the caregiver.
