| Abstract | The Yaguarí Formation, in Uruguay, and its counterpart, the Rio do Rasto Formation in Rio Grande do Sul, have occurrences of bentonites, that are rocks with high potential for economic use. These rocks are composed predominantly of clay minerals of the smectite group, whose genesis is conditioned by the alteration of volcanic ash. The project aims to establish criteria for the selection of areas with potential for mining of bentonite, the main basis of studies of geotectonic, stratigraphic, paleoenvironmental and structural nature factors of regions of southwestern Brazil. The methodologies for these studies based on sampling from outcrops and drilling holes with subsequent description and mineralogical and chemical studies by techniques of X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and chemical analysis used to characterize bentonite in the mineralogical and geochemical context. Combining the data obtained during a field expedition to the results obtained by the techniques of chemical analysis, diffraction and infrared spectroscopy establishes that the smectite of the bentonite from Rio do Rasto formation is an Al-montmorillonite rich in SiO2 with low Fe2O3 content and Ca dominant in the interleaved position. Through remote sensing techniques, the study area was divided into six major morphotectonic units, indicating its main characteristics and listing the types of soils present in each of these units, relating it with the outcrops visited during the field expedition, in addition to conducting a survey of the lineaments observed in the region, showing the best spots for mining of bentonite. |
