| Abstract | A numerical simulation of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) removal in Horizontal Subsurface Flow Constructed Wetlands (HSF CW) is presented. Emphasis is given to select the optimal type of the reaction concerning the BOD removal. For this purpose, a computational investigation is realized by comparing the most usual reaction type, the first-order one, and the recently proposed Monod type, with simulated experimental data obtained from five pilot-scale HSF CW units. These units were operated for 2 years in the facilities of the Laboratory of Ecological Engineering and Technology (LEET), Democritus University of Thrace (DUTh), Xanthi, Greece. For the numerical simulation the Visual MODFLOW family computer code is used, and especially the RT3D code. |
