| Abstract | The livelihood strategies, opportunities and limitations faced by a selected group of 64 innovative farmers in Alto Beni, Bolivia, when starting business initiatives, were analyzed. Four livelihood strategies were identified: 1) agriculture as the only source of income (65% of these households); 2) agriculture combined with livestock (13%); 3) agriculture and paid off-farm employment as a daily laborer or provider (often temporarily) of services such as extensionist, carpenter, plumber or electrician (17%); and 4) agriculture and a small rural business such as bee keeping, selling milk and cheese, selling supplies and equipment, etc (5%). Roadblocks, droughts, price fluctuations of agricultural products and deficient health services are the main vulnerability factors in the area. The farms, their plantations and the good reputation in the national market of fruits from Alto Beni are the main household capitals. The physical, financial, human and social capitals in Alto Beni are low. The presence of consolidated organizations like the Central de Cooperativas El Ceibo (a confederation of cooperatives) and the linkages generated through commerce between Alto Beni households and their relatives in La Paz, El Alto and Oruro offer good opportunities for the development of initiatives and rural businesses that take advantage of the rich natural resources in the zone.
