| Abstract | The main objective of this research was to determine the current characteristics of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) teachers in comparison with the ideal characteristics in the foreign language teaching process. The theoretical foundations were based on works developed by researchers such as Hutchinson and Waters (1987), Robinson (1980), Girard (1986), among others, who describe the language teacher role in an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course. The research follows a descriptive-documental type with a nonexperimental design. The sample was represented by 13 English teachers from four institutions of higher education located in Cabimas-Estado Zulia. The results lead to the conclusion that it is necessary for English teachers to be updated with the new tendencies for ESP teaching so that they adopt an eclectic approach in their English courses. |
