Abstract	The purpose of this work is the analysis of the use of translation in the processes of English language teaching and learning, and especially, in relation to its use as a Primary Education teaching resource. The aim is to show that translation can be a useful instrument in the teaching of a foreign language, provided that it is regarded only as an adjunct to other tasks and activities. Consequently, it is offered a small experiment to test its effectiveness to help in the acquisition of new vocabulary.
