| Abstract | This study aimed at investigating the incidental acquisition of vocabulary from multiple exposures to unknown words through the extensive reading of thematically related texts and the knowledge continuum levels resultant from this acquisition. I have also tried to check if the acquired words are retained for up to a month after the exposures. Fourteen university students of English as a FL participated in the research. Fourteen target-words were selected – comprehending seven nouns, three verbs and four adjectives – whose meaning was unknown to the students, as verified by a previous test. For a period of five consecutive weeks the students were exposed to five different texts for extensive reading in the area of tourism, each containing the fourteen target-words. The texts were read with specific purposes (post-reading activities) which promoted different interactions (oral and written) based on the text information. There was no explicit teaching of the vocabulary. A week after the last exposure, without prior notice, the first post-test (PT1) was applied and thirty days later, the late-post-test (PT2).The data was collected through the Vocabulary Knowledge Scale (VKS), a tool developed by Paribakht & Wesche (1993). The results evidenced there was incidental acquisition of vocabulary, both quantitatively and qualitatively, which was reflected in the number of words acquired and in the different levels of knowledge revealed. The |
