| Abstract | Marine archaeologists have used remote sensing devices with varying degrees of success since at least 1966. The most obvious devices are sonar, side scan sonar, sub bottom profilers, and magnetometers and examples of their use are given. A unique computer program has been developed to simulate side scan sonar images. The system applies ray tracing techniques from computer graphics to the problems of underwater acoustics. Simulated images show good agreement with real results and some examples are given below to illustrate some of the problems of interpreting side scan images when searching for and surveying archaeological remains under water. |
