| Abstract | Despite being generally forbidden by the Jordanian Law of Personal Status, early marriage among Syrian refugees in the camp of Zaatari is still common, and according to some sources, its incidence has increased during the past years. This practice in Zaatari is regulated by the Syrian adat, that at the same time coexists with Jordanian law and decision norms advocated by International NGOs; giving place to a situation of legal pluralism in the camp. The overall aim of this thesis is to contribute to scholarly debates around the socio-legal adaptation of refugees into a new legal environment by exploring legal pluralism in Zaatari and the interplay between the alternative normative orders that conform it, with a focus on the practice of early marriage. For this purpose, this study is based on ethnographic fieldwork combined with qualitative methods of data collection. (Less) |
