| Abstract | Abstract The application of the method of lines to a system of time-dependent partial differential equations gives rise to a system of initial value problems (IVPs) for ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Such systems are often stiff and very large. The need to solve problems of this kind has affected the development of both formulas and codes for IVPs for ODEs. We survey some of these developments. |
