La médiatisation de « l’affaire de la burqa » en France : stratégies de visibilité et crise iconique

Abstract	This article examines the media construction of a certain form of Islamic public visibility by analyzing the French regional and national press coverage of the “Burqa affair” (2009-2010). By means of a semiotic approach, and with reference to the notions of “visibility-invisibility,” “face,” and “iconocrisis,” the article seeks to demonstrate how the burqa affair raises questions about contemporary regimes of visibility and publicity (making public). Considering the media staging of Islam as a site of deployment of strategies of visibility, the article demonstrates how the niqab is (re)presented as both an ostentatious and an opaque sign, and as such, as the antithesis of a French Republican conception of national identity. Cet article porte sur la construction mediatique d'une certaine visibilite publique de l'islam en France a travers l'analyse de la couverture de presse (regionale et nationale) de « l'affaire de la burqa » (2009-2010). Depuis une approche semiotique et au regard des interrogations autour des notions de « visibilite-invisibilite », « visage » et « iconocrise », notre objectif est de demontrer comment « l'affaire de la burqa » souleve des questionnements autour des regimes de visibilite et de publicite (rendre public) contemporains. Considerant la mise en scene mediatique de l'islam comme lieu de deploiement des strategies de visibilite, il nous interesse d'observer comment le niqab est (re)presente comme un signe a la fois ostentatoire et opaque, exprimant l'antithese de la conception republicaine d'« identite nationale ».
