| Abstract | A high temperature Auger electron spectrometer with a cylindrical mirror analyzer and a special object stage is described in detail. The spectrometer is suitable for investigations in ultra high vacuum (1x10 torr) and at object temperatures up to 3000 K without loss of resolution. With this spectrometer the oxygen-tungsten adsorption isotherms have been investigated. These experiments have been carried on polycrystalline specimens as well as on (100), (110) and (111) oriented single crystal faces in the temperature range from 1500 to 2600 K -9 -4 and at oxygen pressures from 10 torr to 10 torr. Prom these experiments the desorption energies have been calculated in function of the oxygen coverage. These results have shown different dependences of co¬ verage for each surface. For the (110) face the greatest decrease of desorption energy from 6.8 eV to 5.0 eV has been evaluated and for the (111) face the smallest one from 6.5 eV to 6.1 eV. The behaviour of the (100) surface lies between the two other faces with energies from 6.2 eV to 4.8 eV. For each surface a unequivocal relation between oxygen pressure and steady state coverage has been derived valid for all temperatures. These functions are characteristic for each surfaces, but an explantation of these functions with the well known simple models of adsorptions is not possible. |
