| Abstract | The performance of three analytical methods based in: (I) flow injection cold vapor/hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (FI-HG-AAS); (II) cold vapor/hydride generation inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (HG-ICP OES) and, pneumatic nebulization inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (III) (PN-ICP OES) for determination of As and Hg in sulfuric acid samples were assessed. The results indicated that the three assessed methods can be used for the determination of As and Hg in sulfuric acid, with larger advantage for the method (I), taking into account LOQ and the cost of the analyses. The other two methods have the advantages of the simultaneous determination of the two analitos, the elimination of the stage of pré-reduction of the arsenic and reduction of ten times in the end volume of sample in relation to the method (I). The method (III) it is the only that it doesn't use cold vapor/hydride generation and therefore it doesn't consume NaBH4. The detection limits for As and Hg, calculated as 3 times the standard deviation of the blank, for the three methods were: method (I) As 0,07 and Hg 0,09 μg L; method (II) As 0,30 and Hg 0,18 μg L and method (III) As 5 and Hg 3 μg L. The relative standard deviations, RSD, for the three methods were, respectively, As 1,8 (5,0 μg L); 1,5 (50 μg L) and 4,0% (50 μg L) and Hg 3,1 (5,0 μg L); 4,3 (5,0 μg L) and 4,3% (5,0 μg L). The concentrations of NaBH4 used in the methods FI-HG-AAS and HG-ICP OES, were respectively, 0,05 and 1,5% m v. Key-words : 1. Analytical Chemistry; 2.
