| Abstract | Among the most prominent features that plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) are in development and health in plants is related to increased availability and uptake of nutrients from soil. Little is known about how other routes such as volatile microbial emission compounds can affect physiology of plants in the absence of physical contact. Microalgabacterium system has been recently used as a model for studying eukariotic-prokariotic interactions, mainly based on associated physical contact or adhesion responses between the two. The objective of this study was to determine if there are remote effects of the PGPB Azospirillum brasilense Cd and Bacillus pumilus ES4 on growth and metabolism of microalgae Chlorella vulgaris, in absence of physical attachment was grown in separate spaces from the bacteria. The microorganisms were incubated in side-arm sealed system flasks connected in pairs. After incubation, total lipids, carbohydrates, chlorophyll ɑ, growth of the population and size of microalgae cells were measured. The greatest effect on these parameters was obtained in treating microalga-bacteria in comparison to controls of microalgae growing alone or adjacent. The greatest effect was with B. pumilus ES4. Changes in metabolic levels of C. vulgaris occurred in response to remote stimulation by PGPB B. pumilus ES4 and A. brasilense Cd on the microalga. Using gas chromatography mass-solid phase microextraction (SPME-GC-MS) to determine volatile compounds produced by B. pumilus ES4 and A. brasilense Cd were identified during the growth phase in a minimal mineral medium in response to a remote effect of these bacteria on the microalga. We demonstrated that physical attachment is not necessary to produce beneficial effects. |
