| Abstract | netherlands interdisciplinary demographic institute To inform the social policy debate in the European Union and to provide insights into the social situation in the Member States, the European Commission established a European Observatory on the Social Situation. One of the dimensions that this Observatory covers is demography and to assist the Commission a Demography Network was created. The general task of this Network is to monitor demographic trends and the demographic situation, as well as population-related socio-economic developments and to analyse the policy implications of these trends in the 25 Member States of the European Union. To the extent possible, also the Candidate Countries and Turkey should be included in this monitoring. |
