| Abstract | The problem is the City of Alice Fire Department has not identified why operational personnel cannot consistently determine the causes of commercial, residential, and vehicle fires in accordance with the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS). The purpose of this study was to identify if barriers exist, why they exist, and what recommendations were needed to properly identify commercial, residential, and vehicle fire causes in accordance with the National Fire Incident Reporting System . There were four questions the researcher needed to answer for this research project: (a) what are the basic requirements in determining fire cause? The research showed that personnel need to be trained as fire investigators, (b) what are the barriers for City of Alice personnel in identifying the proper fire causes? Two possible barriers were identified, one being lack of training as a fire investigator, the other being lack of training on NIFIRS, (c) what are the barriers within the NFIRS software on determining fire causes? Personnel surveyed identified the limited choices for selection as a cause of fire as a possible barrier, (d) what can be done to reduce the barriers for data collection? Training is the answer. A series of surveys and email questionnaires were employed to collect information needed for the project. There were sufficient sources of literature on the subject matter that illustrated the problems being experienced by the City of Alice Fire Department are common with many departments. In addition, these issues have existed over time. There were two recommendations of this research project. First, the City of Alice Fire Department needs to conduct more training on the National Fire Incident Reporting System. Second, the front line officer corps needs to be trained in fire investigations. Both recommendations will improve the quality of data within the reporting system. Evaluation of Fire Reporting 4 |
