| Abstract | This essay was a finalist in the 3rd Annual Gavin Mooney Memorial Essay Competition [2016] which asked “In the digital era, whose voices are being heard?” This competition honours the work and writings of Professor Mooney and draws public attention to the topic he was most passionate about: social justice and health equity. This essay by Dr Newman and Professor Gurstein argues that in the digital era, the question “whose voices are not being heard” is as important as asking whose voices are being heard. It suggests that we need to go the Extra Mile to achieve digital equity for everyone’s voice to have a chance to be heard. We commonly hear the voices of some (particularly those in positions of power or privilege) claiming that “everyone is online these days”. This essay shows that this is a First Digital Myth and moreover a myth which is increasingly being used as justification for moving to the (often exclusively) online environment the entire range of activities: national government services, local government information, and research surveys, to personal and community support programs, and education and health services, and more. |
