Abstract	Emotion has been considered as a global reaction, similar and common to triggering stimuli, characterized by a universal expression and clearly identified by any individual. However emotions also indicate, express or reveal cultural meanings and internalization levels of norms and values in people and social groups. This duality is reflected from Darwin's evolutionary approaches to recent researches on emotional regulation. In fact, are we really able to recognize any emotional expression isolated from its context or culture? Are emotional expressions similar, innate and inherent in every human being? Do European and Oriental people react in a similar way when they are involved in the same situation? This essay is a systematic review of current studies about culture and emotion carried out using original and innovative experimental methodologies with the aim of answering all these questions. Overall, the empirical evidence indicates that expression and emotional adjustments depend mainly on the context, culture and the environment where we evolved. They also reveal differences in the perception of emotional facial expressions, and at the same time they show us substantial differences in facial expressions, gestures and body movements across cultures. All these features highlight the moderating role of culture on human emotions and their regulation.
