| Abstract | This work aimed to identify the most influential meteorological variables for the daily evapotranspiration estimate obtained using the Penman-Monteith method in the region of Pelotas; to select another simpler method that uses them and to propose an adjustment of its parameters or constants to the local climatic conditions in order to improve its performance considering the standard method. The correlation of the meteorological variables with the evapotranspiration estimates was performed using daily meteorological data from the Agroclimatological Station of Pelotas RS in the period between 1971 and 2010. Solar radiation and net radiation were the most influential variables in the methods that use them. Because the JensenHaise method uses only solar radiation and temperature data and shows a performance rate around 0.6 related compared to the standard method, it was chosen for the modification of its constants. The expression of the method with the constants adapted to the region showed a higher performance coefficient than those of the original equation for all seasons of the year, showing a c rate of 0.75 and 0.85 in summer and spring, respectively, and therefore it is appropriate for use in the Pelotas region.
