| Abstract | The WHO estimates that the number of women infected with HIV ranges from 1 million in Africa to 100000 in the US. In the US the ratio of male to female cases is 9:1. In Africa the ratio is 1:1. 60% of the total number of cases of AIDS worldwide were contracted through penile-vaginal intercourse. In the US it is heterosexual transmission that is spreading at the fastest rate. In the US 30% of the female AIDS cases were contracted by heterosexual transmission which represents more than twice as many male heterosexual transmissions. Currently the only method of protecting yourself from AIDS is the use of a male condom. However this leaves women at a distinct disadvantage because of a power differential. Women simply do not have the power to negotiate male condom use. The solution to the critical problem is the release of the female condom. Men have had condoms for centuries now for the 1st time women can protect themselves from STDs and AIDS without having to involve the man. However in many countries the female condom must be marketed and presented in a fashion that allows it to be accepted by both men and women. This is particularly true in countries where women are traditionally not allowed to make contraceptive decisions for themselves. |
