| Abstract | The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of coconut oil in the treatment of liver cirrhosis in rats submitted to the thioacetamide cirrhotic induction model (TAA), and thus to verify the hepatic integrity of the animals, so that health professionals can better guide the patient about the evolution of the disease as well as its treatment. The experiment lasted 12 weeks and 40 male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups, being one control (CO), one CO + coconut oil, TAA group and TAA + coconut oil group. The biochemical, histological and anatomical results of the hepatic tissue showed that the two groups that were induced to hepatic cirrhosis with TAA presented liver injury as expected. In the group that was induced and also received coconut oil in the diet, the liver injury was less advanced. It was verified that coconut oil had protective action on the hepatic tissue and prevented the advancement of the tissue lesion. Coconut oil has a high level of antioxidants that protect the liver tissue from attack by free radicals, while at the same time favoring correct clearance of toxins. In addition, according to the results obtained, the inactivation of the cytochrome P450 activity caused by TAA was reduced in the animals that received coconut oil in the diet and its use was favorable to decrease the progression of the disease. |
