| Abstract | In Mexican population, resistance to insulin and metabolic syndrome appear early in life. Due to changes in life style, sedentary habits had increased in alarming proportions among Mexican children and adolescents. According to the 2006 National Survey of Health and Nutrition, only 38.8% of the adolescents practice physical activity, and obesity has increased between 47 and 77% in the last 7 years. We evaluated the impact the time employed watching TV on the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents from San Luis Potosi. Among local elementary and secondary schools, 871 subjects (490 boys and 381 girls) aged between 6 and 15 years old were randomly chosen. Data about life style were collected by means of a validated questionnaire and a blood sample was obtained after overnight fasting. Glucose and lipids profile were analyzed in an automatic system, insulin levels through Immulite and the insulin resistance index (IRI) was calculated according to the HOMA methodology. The metabolic syndrome was detected in 26.6% and IRI in 33.3% of the studied population. Overweight and obesity were detected in 45.5% and the prevalence of sedentary habits was 40.5%. According to the logistic regression analysis, it was found the risk of metabolic syndrome increases 4.4 times in children and adolescents that watch TV more than 7 hours daily, as compared with those that do not practice this routine. |
