| Abstract | Cet article propose une interpretation de l’abandon scolaire de jeunes decrocheurs et decrocheuses du secondaire de la region de Montreal. La question de l’abandon des etudes est examinee sous l’angle de la socialisation differentielle des sexes. Cette lecture sert a analyser divers constats souvent paradoxaux : d’une part, les filles, desavantagees dans les rapports sociaux de sexe, reussissent mieux a l’ecole et l’abandonnent en moins grand nombre que les garcons; d’autre part, leur meilleure performance scolaire ne les avantage guere en termes d’insertion professionnelle et sociale. L’analyse met en evidence le fait que la decision d’abandonner l’ecole arrive a un moment dans une trajectoire. Cette decision depend autant de ce qui la precede que des attentes face aux consequences de l’abandon scolaire. The authors suggest that dropping out by high school students in the Montreal area be considered in terms of the differential socialization of the sexes. This perspective is useful in analyzing various often paradoxical findings: girls, who are disadvantaged by the effects of gender, do better in school and drop out less often than boys, but their better school performance gives them no advantage in finding work and becoming integrated into society. Analysis shows that the decision to drop out occurs at one moment in a tra- jectory, depending as much on what precedes the event as on its expected consequences. |
