| Abstract | While hardware resources, in the form of both transistors and full microprocessor cores, are now abundant, economic factors prevent specialized hardware mechanisms, required for secure processing, from being integrated into commodity parts. The Information Assurance community is caught between the need to exploit cheap, fast, commodity microprocessors and the need to ensure that critical security properties hold (isolation, separation, etc.). For example, multi-core processors, due to their wide adoption, impressive performance, and low cost, are very attractive platforms for computation. Unfortunately, highly secure, isolated processing of sensitive information on such platforms could be extremely difficult to achieve due to extensive resource sharing and the lack of strong security primitives. |
