| Abstract | The generation and discharge of wastewater are of great concern worldwide, specially in developing countries such as Ecuador where the majority of domestic wastewater are not treated and are downloaded in bodies of water, causing problems in the balance of ecosystems and public health. The objective of this project is to evaluate the feasibility of using local microalgae in order to the recover nitrogen and phosphorus in bioassays batches with synthetic wastewater. Bioassays batches were mounted using a recipe of synthetic waste water to evaluate the effects of forced aeration and the change of initial concentration of NH4+-N in the removal efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus in local microalgae culture. The experiments weremantained at ambient temperature with fotoperiodos of 12 hours of artificial light. Additionally, a calibration curve was performed and it relates two methods for the determination of the cell density: the count with the Neubauer chamber, and the optical density of the cultivation algal. Both methods achieved a curve fitting of R2 = 0.996. The results obtained concerning the bioassays showed negative effects by the use of forced aeration, with removal efficiencies of 53% vs. 57%-NH4+-N and 74% vs. 9%-PO43--P, and production of NO3--N of 87% vs.37% for aireation and forced aireation, respectively. Regarding the variation of the concentration initial of NH4+-N, their removal efficiencies for NH4+-N and PO43--P were 53, 48 and 57% and 74, 16 and 31%, respectively for an NH4+-N initial concentration of 86.81 (100%), 43.41 (50%), and 21.70 (25%) mg L-1, being the initial concentration of NH4+-N of 100% the ideal one to satisfy the request of nitrogen of the microalgae and in this way raise its removal capacity inside a wastewater treatment. |
