| Abstract | The hospital environment is causing concerning to the society, due the high number of patients in the same area and because of microbial diversity that have been found in its wastes. The hospitals release in their sewage a variety of substances including drugs, antibiotics, disinfectants, anesthetics, heavy metals and non-metabolized drugs, that can provide the development of multi-resistant bacterial communities. Pseudomonas areruginosa, due to et ubiquitous nature, is commonly found in the hospital environment, being considered one of the most relevant pathogen. This study includes the discussion about microbiological characteristics of hospital wastes, as the impact of the release of these effluents without adequate preliminary treatment into hydric resources, which associated risks include pathogenic microorganism spread in the environment. We analyzed a wastewater treatment plant in the Rio de Janeiro city efficiency by biochemical and molecular identification of P. aeruginosa isolates; the determination of their antimicrobial susceptibility and their behavior during the treatment process. We detected the presence of P. aeruginosa during all the treatment steps, and a number of susceptible and resistant strains against cefepime; imipenem; aztreonam; gentamicin; ciprofloxacina; and norfloxacina, reflecting the diversity of the isolates. We concluded that a) the treatment plant was not able to eliminate P. aeruginosa strains from the treated effluent b) the molecular approach was more sensible and efficient than conventional methodology for the isolates identification and c) the multresistant P. aeruginosa strains are currently released into the environment. These results will allow the assessment of the influence of treatment on resistant pathogens performance, avoiding their dissemination in water resources. |
