| Abstract | COURSE SUMMARY This course is an introduction to the methods used to analyse spell duration data (e.g. how long a marriage lasts, or a spell of unemployment). The objectives are: to communicate skills necessary to understand and assess the applications of survival analysis reported in the literature; and to provide skills which could be applied to analyse a variety of research and policy problems e.g. in dissertation research. The course is perhaps distinctive because of its emphasis on analysis of discrete time (grouped) duration data as well as analysis of continuous time duration data (which is the focus of most texts). The practical work is undertaken using the software Stata. If you have not used Stata before, please consult http://www.stata.com/links/resources1.html. These web pages provide many freely downloadable resources on how to get started, and how to make the transition from software such as SPSS, or SAS. Also see Lesson 1 of Jenkins (2005b). |
