| Abstract | Accurate monitoring of snow cover is a key component for studying climate and global change as well as for daily weather forecasting and snowmelt run-off modelling. These applications even require information of the snow cover extent in near real-time. This paper is focused on real-time processing of NOAA AVHRR data for snow cover analysis of the European Alps. Especially in the complex topography of the Alps with heterogenous surfaces and small patches of snow each AVHRR pixel potentially contains a mixture of perhaps snow covered areas, forests, rocks, urban areas etc. Binary snow classifications of such mixed pixels can lead to errors which renders the area estimation inaccurate. Therefore we adapt the widely used linear spectral mixture algorithm to retrieve snow cover at sub-pixel resolution. The algorithm is embedded in a multi-step straightforward procedure to automatically detect snow over land in an AVHRR scene at subpixel scale. This physical based method extends the classical pixel-based algorithms and leads to a fast and robust solution for operational and near real-time processing of AVHRR data. The sub-pixel procedure identifies reasonably snow cover fractions in the Alps. First comparison is done using in situ snow observations from selected weather stations evaluating short-time snow accumulation and snow ablation periods. The results are in good agreement with the dynamic behaviour of the snow cover. Nevertheless, relatively low agreements are observed due to conditions of relief, illumination conditions, cloud misclassification, algorithm constraints and scaling effects. |
