| Abstract | This paper aims at developing a numerical modelling methodology which represents the fluid flow and mixing phenomenon in a physical model of a steelmaking ladle with an elliptical base. The specific aims of the paper are: the study of the coefficients of liquidbubble interaction, the turbulence models and the change of the base shape from circular ladle to elliptical. The fluid flow and the mixing phenomenon were calculated through the Elementbased Finite Volume Method through Ansys’ CFX5.7 software. Data from literature and physical model experiments, carried out in laboratory, contributed with the numerical model validation. The study of the non-drag force coefficients showed that the air distribution along the bath height results changes with the coefficients variation. At the end, coefficients for 3 ladle configurations in different mass flow rates were found. Concerning the study of turbulence models, the k-ε is more suitable for the fluid flow and mixing phenomenon solution in a circular base ladle. On the other hand, for an elliptical base ladle, the RSM (Reynolds Stress Model) is more adequate. Finally, with the respect to the study of the change of the ladle base shape, the mixing times of an elliptical base ladle are higher than the one with a circular base and they increase with the decrease of the mass flow rate. |
