| Abstract | Background HIV infection is nowadays considered a chronic and manageable disease. The healthrelated quality of life (HRQOL) of people with HIV is lower than in the general population, but it is unknown how it compares to that of persons with other chronic medical conditions. We compared HRQOL in HIV infection with HRQOL in three other chronic diseases: diabetes mellitus (DM) type 1, DM type 2 and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Additionally, we investigated factors associated with HRQOL in people with HIV. Methods We conducted a cross sectional study in all 26 HIV healthcare facilities in the Netherlands. HRQOL was measured with the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 36-item health survey (SF-36) in people with HIV who were on cART ≥6 months. For the comparison with other chronic diseases, we used data from studies in patients with DM type 1, DM type 2 and RA in the Netherlands. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between chronic disease group and a poor physical or mental HRQOL, adjusted for age, gender and region of origin. We identified factors related to poor mental and physical HRQOL in the HIV-positive group. |
