| Abstract | Interface Standards (IS) (9) become available for the inter- connection of distributed high performance transputer systems; for in- stance the Fibre Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) and the High Per- formance Parallel Interface (HIPPI). The FDDI with 100 Mb/s back- bone speed is an exellent Interface Standard for a Transputer Link In- terface (TLI) to interconnect distributed 100 Mb/s Inmos IMS T9000 links (13, 12). For a Gigabit communication channel the high performance point-to-point HIPPY is a 1.6 Gb/s Interface Standard (7, 8). In the past the communication links had represented the performance bottlenecks of distributed transputer systems. However, now having enormous band- width the communication bandwidth is no longer a constraint. For the application of multitransputer systems in solving complex computational problems for distributed automatic control and in order to meet the re- quirements on the underlying communication system the paper gives an answer to the question - do gigabit transputer links for distributed trans- puter systems represent just another step in the evolutionary process of greater bandwidth systems ? |
