| Abstract | A frame of reference for analyzing the challenges of public health education in Mexico is presented. This framework considers two main groups of variables that will shape the future of this field. One group includes the variables within the external environment of educational institutions. The second considers several variables of the internal environment. It is important to consider that all these variables have some influence not only by coming from outside or from inside but also because of their interactions. The extemal environment variables are grouped within two sets: "health conditions" and "health systems ", which characterize the "dynamism of the context " On the ather hand, some variables must be considered; the Ones called "educational inertia" and "inertia of the demand ", opposed lo the dynamism al the contexto These, themselves, are some of the challenges. From the analysis of the intemal environment, several challenges are identified: better conceptualization of public health as an area of knowledge; need to define educational models; need to improve research on the field as well as the integration of teaching with research and the health care field; lack of adequate faculty and the need to reshape the leadership in educalional public health institutions. |
