| Abstract | Autistic children can handle nonverbal stimuli (such as music) more easily than verbal stimuli (such as language). Hence, some authors propose that music could be used more effectively than spoken language to communicate with this population. We examined the effects of a global music program on the expressive ability of a nonverbal 5-year-old autistic child. Measurement instruments included standardized music tests, semi-directed interviews with the child’s mother, and various grids developed by the researcher and compiled by the researcher and the mother. After 7 weeks of the music program, the child showed improved expressive language ability and greater autonomy. This study adds to the scant literature on this topic and advocates for music education that is adapted for autistic children to promote their inclusion in regular classrooms. |
