| Abstract | of the present study was to assess the clinical utility of the DSM-IV criteria of somatoform disorders among a larger consecutive sample of patients in a pain clinic (n = 584). Of these, 377 subjects fulfilled diagnostic criteria of a somatoform disorder according to DSM-IV. This subsample was compared with a number of 122 subjects with medically explainable chronic pain syndromes. As compared to these, patients with somatoform disorders significantly more often exhibited widespread pain, rated more often mental problems as a reason for their pain, showed significantly more medical appointments during the last 6 months and were significantly more often off work. These results underline the utility of DSM-IV criteria for the differentiation of somatoform disorders among chronic pain patients, in particular the assessment of health-related attitudes and illness behaviour. In contrast, the validity of particular diagnostic categorie, as proposed by DSM-IV for the group of somatoform disorders (somatisation disorder, undifferentiated somatoform disorder, two subtypes of pain disorder) remains unclear.
