| Abstract | The objective of this paper is to test the contributions of the economic growth and the human capital on poverty and extreme poverty reduction of the Brazilian States. The panel data model estimated considers the dynamics and the fixed effects of each state over time. Another important aspect considered in the estimates was the causality among the variables. The overall result is that the states economic growth and overall human capital accumulation has contributed to extreme poverty reduction over time. However, the index of poverty reduction is mostly coming from overall human capital accumulation. Nonetheless, specific education policies that increase access to school by youth have yet not contributed to any kind of poverty alleviation. In sum, overall human capital accumulation are most effective than specific educational policies. Key-words: Poverty; economic growth; education; states; dynamics estimates.
