| Abstract | Currently, remote sensing offers a wide range of data at very high resolution. The characterization of the forest resource is essential for sustainable forest management. This work aims to develop a method to characterize the structure and composition of deciduous stand state using very high resolution remote sensing data. This methodology has been applied to the Epioux estate located in the south of the Walloon Region. In a second step, the wood uptakes and the dead oaks were recorded. Remote sensing data corresponds to LiDAR data (spatial resolution 1 m), aerial imagery (spatial resolution between 0.50 m and 0.10 m); as well as Sentienl-2 images. The characterization of the structure was carried out by modeling stand wood volume and stand basal area at plot scale (R2 resp. 0.43 and 0.42); as well as through the creation of an allometric model of individual circumference. The implementation of these two approaches is preceded by a tree crown segmentation step. The specific composition was only modeled in terms of proportion of oak at plot scale (R2 = 0.59). The wood uptakes were identified between 2014 and 2017 by analyzing the evolution of the canopy height. The dead oaks have been identified by photo-interpretation. Some of these results, combined together, are a real opportunity for the creation of concrete tools to support forest management. The creation of maps made allows the spatialization structure and composition information. These tools could also allow the reorganization of the work of foresters. The improvement of data quality or the segmentation step might increase results exactness. |
