| Abstract | Intravaginal devices (ID) impregnated with progesterone were used to determinate the time between the placement of ID and the moment when the preovulatory follicle reaches more than 35 mm O (FPO > 35mm), and the time from this moment until the ovulation in two groups, with 30 Thoroughbred mares selected at random: Group 1, n = 15, intravaginal devices with 1.38 g of progesterone together with 25 mg i.m. of estradiol benzoate (EB). Group 2, n = 15, ID with 1.0 g of progesterone together with 25 mg i.m. of EB. Ultrasonography was carried out from the 4 th day after the insertion of the ID until the POF > 35mm, withdrawal was done at that moment and the mares were presented to a teaser for oestrus detection and the time of ovulation was controlled by means of ultrasonography.
