| Abstract | Access to electricity is one of the main aspects in economic and social development. It is essential for a clean water provision, efficient lighting, heating, cooking, sanitation and healthcare, among others basic services. According to the International Energy Agency(IEA) about 16% of the worldwide population does not have access to electricity or their energy requirements are covered by fossil fuels, and more than 38% of the population relies on the traditional biomass for cooking. Factors such as low population density, long distances between generation systems to consumers and difficult access hinder the power supply to a large part of the population, especially on rural and marginal urban areas. |
