| Abstract | The main aim of this paper is to analyse critically the social conflicts which arose in the rural sector of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, from 1978 to 1988. Through a comparative analysis, the author evaluates the political effects of these conflicts and examines their weaknesses and limits. The conflicts studied are: the landless peasant clash; the peasant movement against the construction of dams and its resulting land expropriation; the peasant famers manifestations in the defense of prices for their production; the rural women's movement for citizenship rights. |
