| Abstract | High arsenic levels in drinking water cause cardiovascular problems and skin cancer. Mexican regulations for drinking water establishes a limit of 0.025 mg/L for this element. There are mineral deposits with high levels of arsenic in the arid regions of northern Mexico; this arsenic is dissolved by groundwater flowing through them. The Meoqui-Delicias aquifer in the State of Chihuahua, which is the main water source for the municipalities of Julimes, Meoqui, Rosales and Delicias, has been affected by these minerals. Samples of 61 drinking water wells were collected from these municipalities located at the north section of the aquifer. Arsenic concentration was determined and its possible source was established as related to the most relevant hydrogeological aspects in the area. Dissolved solids analysis confirmed the groundwater flow direction. The arsenic limit was exceeded in 72% of water samples, which in majority correspond to the Julimes and Meoqui municipalities. Hydrogeological information shows a natural geogenic source of arsenic, related to the recharge flow coming from arsenopyrite mineral deposits of surrounding mountains and the contact with sediments accumulated in the aquifer through time. In Julimes, upflow of geothermal water and high evaporation rate favor high arsenic concentration in groundwater. Reverse osmosis process is applied for demineralization of drinking water in the communities affected by arsenic and other undesirable elements. |
