| Abstract | Cecropia glaziovii Snethl. is an tree species, dioic, pioneer and frequent in gaps and borders of the Atlantic Forest. It gathers medicinal properties and ecological characteristic that indicate potentialities for the management of natural populations and restoration of disturbed areas. The present study was accomplished from June/2002 to December/2003 with objective of characterizing aspects of the ecology of C. glaziovii, as form of contributing in the fundamentation of management strategies and conservation of natural populations of the species. The aspects studied were: population structure; vegetative phenology; phenology and characteristics of the reproductive biology; as well as the associated fauna the inflorescences and infrutescences of C. glaziovii. This study was accomplished in natural populations of Cecropia glaziovii in the Santa Catarina Island (SC) and Ibirama (SC), in Atlantic Rain Forest ecossistems. The population structure of C. glaziovii was associated to forests conditions of brightness, (gaps, borders and canopy) and most of the individuals was distributed among the seedlings and juvenile and in smaller proportion the reproductive trees. The population distribution in diameter and height classes, demonstrated a “filter environmental” in the juvenile, possibly associated to the time of closing of the gap, phase in that juvenile should have a fast growth to avoid the shadow. In primary forests the reproductive trees frequency was significantly smaller than in forests in regeneration. Juveniles and reproductives trees lost and emitted leaves constantly along the year. Juveniles had a change of leaves behavior more intense than reproductives trees, suggesting larger dynamism in the growth, that the largest competition should be associated inside by brightness of gap and to the recruitment before the closing of the gap. The flowering of C. glaziovii was continuous along September/2002 to May/2003, with pick in the January/2003. The pick of the frutification felt in February/2003 when it was also observed the beginning of the fruit dispersion that extended until August/2003. The fauna associated to inflorescences showed high frequency of two species of Udeus (Curculionidae), wich visited mainly the staminate inflorescences, for reproduction , ovoposition and feeding (pollen). In the inflorescences pistilate the presence of Udeus spp. happened in quite reduced number; however, the results also indicate the possibility of the entomophyllus, besides the anemophyllus, for the genera Cecropia. Ten species of mammals and birds were registered feeding of infrutescences of Cecropia glaziovii. The largest frequency of visitors was observed during April and May/2003 (1 visitor every 45 minutes of observation). The results point out the importance of the species for composition of ecological corridors and in the processes of environmental restoration. Under the point of view of the management of natural populations the results suggest that the exploration of leaves of C. glaziovii should be in adult individuals, out of the reproductive period and in forests in regeneration. The constant production of leaves during the year suggests that the exploration of leaves can in short period to be restored by the dynamism of the species. |
