| Abstract | The vertical structure of water masses in the western part of the South Atlantic Ocean is studied based on the outputs of the oceanic model Ocean Circulation and Climate Advanced Modeling Project (OCCAM) with two horizontal resolutions: 1/4° and 1/12°. In order to investigate the circulation patterns of water masses and their bifurcation regions, maps of horizontal volume transport were designed and vertical profiles of meridional averaged velocity were evaluated at zonal sections off the Brazilian continental margin located at: 5° S, 13° S, 22 °S and 30 °S. In the scope of this work, the isopycnal interfaces between bodies of water are the limits of vertical integration adopted for the calculation of volume transport. The results of the OCCAM model provided a realistic representation of vertical structure and estimates of volume transport for the masses of water compatible with the values found in literature. The resolution of 1/12° showed greater efficiency in describing the dynamic patterns of the study area. The model results show an eastward zonal variation conditioned by the local bathymetry and a southern migration with increasing depth of the region of bifurcation of the South Equatorial Current. The annual average latitude of the bifurcation for each water mass, calculated by the OCCAM model are 13°S in the Tropical Water level, 21°S in the level of the South Atlantic Central Water and 29°S in the level at the Antarctic Intermediate Water. The North Atlantic Deep Water flows southward throughout the whole region, as an organized flow over the entire Brazilian coast, with a larger tendency to meander in regions where topography changes are more pronounced, such as the Vitoria-Trindade Submarine Chain. |
