Abstract	The Metropolitan region of Recife presented the highest growth in it commuting time between 2003 e 2013, a period of strong increase in its urban density. The present work provides evidence about the influence of urban density on commuting time for the Metropolitan Region of Recife (RMR), by studying the home-work translation time of the employed. The results are obtained using spatial econometrics models applied to data provided by the 2010 IBGE Demographic Census for the Areas de Ponderações. The main evidence indicates that local density has a positive and significant influence on commuting time of the Areas de Ponderações of RMR, a result consistent with the presence of negative externalities associated with the congestion of local urban space. Furthermore, this result is robust to the consideration of traditional influence of different variables on commuting time arising, for example, from local income and distance to the CBD.
