| Abstract | An enthusiastic discourse about suitability of community-based tourism (CBT) has been promoted in Mexico as a way of revitalizing rural areas. Nevertheless, a review of experiences indicates that, in most cases, these have not shown the expected success. The objective of this research was to develop an ex-ante assessment in a rural area of tropical dry lands in Mexico where CBT has not been introduced yet, using a multi-scalar, systemic and community-based approach. The intervention focused on the paradigm of the action research and on the soft system methodology. This research aimed a double contribution, social and academic: building a process of cognitive construction and social learning that on the one hand allows the facilitator to use results to produce scientific knowledge, and on the other allows local people to gain new information adapted to their situation. Results showed the necessity to analyse before the introduction of any tourist activity the ex ante conditions of the territory and the local visions of concerned actors that influence directly the construction of a tourist space. This work suggest that the construction process of a CBT initiative and the mechanism that are created, must be studied with more attention. |
