| Abstract | Major abdominal surgery in high-risk patients is linked to a high incidence of complications, therefore leading to high morbidity-mortality and a longer Intensive Care Unit length of stay. An appropriate therapeutic handling of postoperative critical patients is essential in order to reduce these complications and improve the postoperative prognosis. This dissertation has involved the development of a clinical guideline for the Intensive Care Service. The guideline includes in a standardized way the main action procedures and recommendations relative to fluid therapy and nutritional support in postoperative patients undergoing major abdominal surgery, with the purpose to reduce complications and the ICU and hospital length of stay. In the aforementioned work we address topics such as the evidence of the use of dynamic versus static parameters to guide the fluid therapy, the characteristics of the devices used for hemodynamic monitoring and the guidelines for starting the nutritional therapy and her administration tracts. For this work, several biomedical databases have been checked and, by using different research strategies, we have chosen the most relevant articles for this topic. |
