| Abstract | Abstract : Generation and propagation of surface plasmons on nano-structured gold films was studied using optical and electron-beam techniques. Optical excitation of surface plasmons in Au-black films prepared by evaporation in moderate vacuum was observed. Initial indication of propagation of surface plasmons at visible-light frequencies over ~10 nm length scales was observed. A tunable terahertz detector based on two-dimensional plasmons in a semiconductor heterostructure was designed. These results have application to the characterization of the complex permittivity of absorbing films for terahertz bolometers and to the development of a terahertz spectrometer on a chip, both of which are relevant to terahertz remote chemical and biological sensing. |
