Abstract	The keen interest in human names displayed by psychologists (espe-cially those from the USA) has generated much research, the effects of which are not as yet widely known in Poland. This article presents the results of several such research programs, concerning the connotation of names, the conseąuences of socalled unusual names, the naming process and the attractiveness of names. These results are not unanimous. The archival method and the correlative procedure are often used in these research programs. Some have a causative character. Both interpretation and integration are made difficult by the lack of an adeąuate theoretical structure. Still, despite its numerous methodolo-gical shortcomings, the knowledge gathered in the article seems to be a convincing proof that names are an important psychological variable. This has also been noticed by scientists researching gender-related stereotypes, who proved the importance of names in a series of experiments.
