| Abstract | A Surgical Site Infection is defined as the infection from the tissue surrounding the surgical wound or deeper tissues, cavities or organs being manipulated during surgery. It could appear on the immediate post-operatory period or within the next 30 days following surgery. Surgical Site Infections (SSI) are classified depending on the dephtness of the tissue or organ affected. Several risk factors have been identified as a source of SSI; intrinsic factors are related to the patient ́s comorbidities and extrinsic ones rely on the surgical environment or type of procedure. In regarding of the pathogens isolated from SSI, they can vary according to local conditions and the type of surgical procedure as well, but in general, germens such as Escherichia coli, Enterococcus spp. and Streptococcus pyogenes are linked to this pathology. Due to its importance as the most common cause of preventable intrahospitalary infection, a number of clinical guides have been implemented, highlighting four methods to achieve the prevention and control of Surgical Site Infections, specifically: methods of skin decontamination before surgery, appropriate use of prophylactic antimicrobials, maintenance of glycaemia control and maintenance of normothermia during the operation. |
